The decision to terminate lease negotiations for the Bunting Road location was confirmed by the Niagara Region following Ford’s intervention. The region now faces the challenge of finding an alternative site by the end of the year to meet the urgent need for shelter services in St. Catharines.

City officials have explored numerous potential locations in St. Catharines but have yet to identify a suitable site that meets all necessary criteria. The region’s housing services director emphasized the critical role of shelter services in supporting individuals experiencing homelessness by providing a safe environment while facilitating access to housing and essential support services.

Residents, including Link and Coun. Lindal, expressed relief and gratitude towards Ford for his direct involvement and decision to halt the establishment of the shelter at the contentious location.
