“Dolly Parton to Be Honored with Airport Renaming”

Published on

The late Dolly Parton is set to have Nashville International Airport renamed in her honor, following a decision by the airport’s board of commissioners in Tennessee. The move, which gained traction after Parton’s recent passing at 80 years old, was supported by a social media campaign by fans and backed by Nashville Mayor Freddie O’Connell and Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee.

Governor Lee emphasized Parton’s significant impact on Tennessee, stating that her life is deeply intertwined with the state’s history and culture. The decision to rename the airport was highlighted as a crucial way to celebrate her remarkable legacy and the positive influence she has had on Tennessee, including the substantial economic contributions she brings through her Dollywood theme park.

Born in Pittman Center in 1946 and raised in Locust Ridge, Tennessee, Dolly Parton rose to fame by showcasing her talents at a young age, performing at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville and later pursuing a successful music career. While the renaming process timeline remains uncertain, the airport’s current policy stipulates a waiting period of at least two years after an individual’s passing before naming any property in their honor.

The specific name for the airport honoring Dolly Parton has not been finalized yet. The Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority affirmed its commitment to collaborating with relevant stakeholders to carefully decide how to best incorporate Dolly Parton’s name and legacy into the airport’s identity.
