Provincial authorities have disclosed the discovery of a third set of human remains at a location near Smiths Falls in eastern Ontario. The recently identified remains belong to Lawrence Bertrim, who was last seen in downtown Smiths Falls in September 2022. Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are currently investigating the cause of his death, with no charges filed at this point. A $50,000 reward for information leading to a conviction in Bertrim’s case remains available, as confirmed by the police.

Bertrim, who was 42 years old when he vanished, has now been located, providing closure to his family after almost four years of uncertainty. Detective Inspector Jennifer Patton of the OPP stressed the significance of this development for both the family and the investigative team, who have dedicated substantial efforts to this case.

The discovery of Bertrim’s remains on the Kelly Jordan Road property on August 6 came shortly after the finding of another missing man, Robert Lambert, on the same property in July. While no charges have been laid in Lambert’s case, police have expressed suspicions of foul play. Additionally, the remains of Robbie Thomson were found on the same residential property in October 2025, leading to the charging of four individuals in connection with his death, including three facing first-degree murder charges.

Reports indicate that Bertrim and Thomson were acquainted with each other, along with 34-year-old Steven Tate, whose body was located in a ditch along Highway 15 in November 2023. The deaths of Tate, Bertrim, and Thomson had a profound impact on the Smiths Falls community, with the discoveries of the human remains deeply affecting the small town and its surrounding rural areas, according to local officials.
