A recent study reveals that some lake sturgeon in the Great Lakes may have existed for over 400 years, challenging previous scientific assumptions. These ancient-looking, armored fish, capable of reaching 180 kilograms and two meters in length, are designated as an endangered species in the Great Lakes and at risk in Ontario due to historical overfishing and habitat destruction.

The research, drawing on over four decades of data from captured and recaptured lake sturgeon across the Great Lakes, indicates that the recovery of these populations may be a more prolonged process than initially anticipated.

According to Ed Baker, a fisheries scientist leading the study for the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, there is a possibility of 400-year-old lake sturgeon swimming in these waters. Traditional methods estimated their lifespan at 150 years, but determining their age is complex, requiring a different approach than simply counting growth rings.

By analyzing 44 years of capture data, Baker and his team calculated the growth rates of individual sturgeon between captures to predict the time needed to reach maturity. One remarkable case involved a male sturgeon that grew merely seven centimeters over 34 years, leading to age estimates spanning centuries.

The findings have significant implications for conservation efforts led by researchers like Trevor Pitcher from the University of Windsor. The prolonged lifespan of sturgeon challenges existing conservation plans, potentially requiring adjustments to habitat restoration initiatives in the Great Lakes region.

Pitcher emphasizes the crucial role of sturgeon in maintaining ecological balance by controlling invasive species populations. His team is actively involved in training individuals in various regions to raise lake sturgeon, aiming to bolster populations across the Great Lakes.

Lake sturgeon hold cultural significance, representing elders in Anishinaabe tradition due to their longevity and ancient lineage. Perry McLeod-Shabogesic, an elder from Nipissing First Nation, underscores the unique status of sturgeon as beings existing “in between,” embodying a distinct place in the natural world.

The acknowledgment of sturgeon’s potentially extended lifespan aligns with ancestral knowledge and traditions, validating long-held beliefs within Indigenous communities.
