Summer McIntosh Falls Short in Women’s 400m Freestyle Heat

Summer McIntosh, the current world record-holder in the women’s 400-meter freestyle, did not qualify for the A final at the Pan Pacific Swimming Championships in Irvine, California. Despite being in a position to secure the second spot behind Australia’s Lani Pallister in the morning heat, McIntosh finished third, placing ninth overall with a time of 4 minutes 8.56 seconds, which was 14 seconds slower than her record time. China’s Fan Yaqi, aged 15, claimed the final spot for the 10:07 p.m. ET final with a time of 4:08.36.

The 19-year-old Canadian athlete from Toronto acknowledged her misjudgment in the morning heats and confirmed her participation in the B final at 10:01 p.m., alongside teammate Ella Cosgrove, who ranked 13th overall. The live stream of the event will be accessible on CBCSports.ca and CBC Gem.

Last June, McIntosh set a new record of 3:54.18 at the Canadian swimming trials in Victoria, surpassing the previous record set by the now-retired Ariarne Titmus of Australia in 2023. The anticipated A final on Friday at the William Woollett Jr. Aquatics Center was expected to be a showdown between American record-holder Katie Ledecky, Lani Pallister, and Summer McIntosh. Ledecky secured the top qualifying spot with a time of 4:03.48, while Pallister placed fourth with a time of 4:05.22.

McIntosh made her debut at the Pan Pacifics with a silver in the women’s 200 freestyle, closely trailing Pallister, who set a championship record. She continued her success by breaking the championship record in the 400 individual medley and winning bronze in the women’s 200 free relay. On Saturday, McIntosh is set to compete in the 200 IM event.

The athlete expressed her gratitude for the support received and her determination to perform better in the upcoming races in a statement posted on Instagram. The event’s progress and McIntosh’s performances can be followed through the available live stream and coverage channels.
