St. Catharines, Ontario, is still dealing with the aftermath of recent floods, with debris like couches, mattresses, and drywall lining the streets after enduring three significant storm events in less than two weeks. Mayor Mat Siscoe remarked that these storms were the most severe the city has experienced in such quick succession.

The initial storm was managed well by the stormwater system, but subsequent storms overwhelmed the already saturated ground, causing widespread flooding and sewer backups that led to sewage entering homes. Dave White, a local farmer, managed to protect his garlic crops during the recent storms by taking proactive measures based on past experiences.

White, who also runs a restoration company, has been inundated with calls from homeowners facing flooding issues. He expressed frustration at revisiting properties he had previously restored, now underwater once again. He emphasized the urgent need for infrastructure upgrades to prevent future flooding, attributing the overwhelmed systems to a combination of aging infrastructure and increased urban development.

Despite increased spending on sewer systems in St. Catharines over the past decade, replacing the entire system would require billions of dollars, with a shortage of contractors and workers hindering the process. The recent storms exceeded the capacity of the region’s drainage infrastructure, emphasizing the need for comprehensive upgrades and better flood mitigation strategies.

City officials are now focusing on developing a flood resilience plan and exploring innovative solutions, such as redesigning parks to absorb excess rainwater. However, Mayor Siscoe stressed the need for additional provincial and federal funding to address the high cost of infrastructure replacement. He acknowledged that the work ahead will be extensive and time-consuming but emphasized the importance of prioritizing residents’ quality of life in infrastructure planning.
