Ben McKenzie, known for his role as Ryan Atwood in the popular TV series “The O.C.,” has shifted his focus from acting to exposing what he refers to as the “largest Ponzi scheme in history”: cryptocurrency. In his documentary “Everyone Is Lying to You for Money,” McKenzie delves into the world of cryptocurrency, highlighting how a select few insiders profit immensely while most regular investors face losses.
Having initially ventured into cryptocurrency investment based on a friend’s recommendation without a clear understanding of the concept, McKenzie, armed with an economics degree, delved deeper into the industry. His research revealed what he describes as the deceptive nature of the entire cryptocurrency realm.
In 2022, McKenzie testified before a U.S. Senate committee on cryptocurrency and co-authored a book titled “Easy Money: Cryptocurrency, Casino Capitalism, and the Golden Age of Fraud.” Despite industry criticism that his documentary portrays harmful narratives about cryptocurrency, McKenzie advocates for enhanced regulations to safeguard investors’ interests.
Addressing the appeal of cryptocurrency to men, McKenzie explains that the allure of potentially vast wealth and private ownership without government interference captivates many. However, he points out that cryptocurrency predominantly targets men who may be financially struggling, exploiting their tendencies towards risk-taking and reluctance to discuss losses.
Highlighting instances where investors suffered significant losses while some insiders profited substantially, McKenzie underscores the susceptibility to manipulation and fraud within the cryptocurrency market. He emphasizes that while cryptocurrency critiques the shortcomings of the traditional financial system, it poses graver risks and fails to offer a viable alternative.
Despite encountering individuals who continue to believe in cryptocurrency despite losses, McKenzie attributes this persistence to psychological factors like the sunk-cost fallacy and societal failures in providing financial security. He stresses the need for a critical evaluation of cryptocurrency’s true implications and the importance of protecting vulnerable investors from potential exploitation in the unregulated crypto sphere.
