An 18-year-old male has been accused of murder and attempted murder following the discovery of a deceased schoolgirl.

Lainie Williams, aged 17, was found deceased at her residence in Cefn Fforest, South Wales, on Thursday morning. Her mother, Rhian Stephens, aged 38, sustained severe injuries but has since been released from the hospital. Police responded to an incident at Wheatley Place at approximately 7:15 am after receiving reports of two individuals with serious injuries.

Gwent Police has formally charged Cameron Cheng, 18 years old, hailing from Newbridge, with murder, attempted murder, and possession of a bladed item in a public area. Cheng, identified as a British national from Newbridge by the authorities, has been detained for a court appearance at Newport Magistrates’ Court on Monday.

Assistant Chief Constable Vicki Townsend stated, “We acknowledge the significant public interest in this case.” She emphasized the importance of mindful language, particularly in online comments, to avoid hindering the judicial process in holding any individuals responsible for criminal acts.

She added, “Although we have made progress in the investigation, our inquiries are ongoing, and residents may observe continued police presence in the vicinity. Should anyone possess relevant information, we urge them to engage with our officers or reach out through official channels.”

Individuals with information can reach the authorities by dialing 101, sending a direct message on social media, or using the form on the Gwent Police website, quoting log reference 2500361653. Alternatively, Crimestoppers offers a platform for anonymous online or telephonic tip submissions.

Members of Lainie’s family remembered her as “brave and beautiful.” Cousin Megan shared on social media, “There are no words enough to express our grief. Rest in peace, our courageous and lovely cousin Lainie. I will forever hold dear the fond childhood memories. You were and still are dearly loved.”

Cefn Fforest Councilor Shane Williams expressed deep shock and sorrow over the unfolding events, saying, “As councilors, we aim to offer reassurance to all, and our hearts go out to the family during this difficult time… The loss of a young girl in such tragic circumstances is truly devastating.”
